Qualifications

Montana has no state contractors licensing. Montana has a contractor registration. Registration is quite lenient and does not require knowledge testing or proof of financial ability. Building inspections are only conducted in the incorporated cities of Montana. Anything built outside the city limits has, at best, been inspected by the state plumbing and electrical inspectors. No structural building inspection has been conducted outside city limits. Consequently, with no state licensing and many uninspected homes, construction in Montana is a buyer beware situation.

I have been a general contractor in western Montana for 23 years and have been conducting home inspections since 2010. I have previously held contractors licenses in both California and Nevada prior to moving to Montana. I hold insurance adjuster’s licenses in 13 states.  With over 32 years of building experience in cold, snowy climates in the Sierras and northern Montana, I have the knowledge and experience you are looking for to identify both hidden problems and potential future problems.

I have a wide variety of construction experience with many types of buildings. I have constructed small remodels on 100 year old homes and have completed large custom homes up to 8000 square feet.  Small commercial buildings and large custom townhomes have also been a part of my building experience.

I have adjusted over 450 wind and hail claims. A working knowledge of homeowner’s policies and coverages has proved valuable in the home inspection business. It is important to know what is covered and what will not be covered should you need to file a claim against your homeowner’s policy.

As a member of International Association of Certified Home Inspectors, I am required to complete continuing education classes to further my knowledge of building science and adhere to a strict Code of Ethics.

You expect your inspector to have a working knowledge of building construction, materials, methods, as well as codes and regulations. He needs to have the experience to see hidden issues as well as future problems.  Knowledge without experience is only half an inspection. When I complete your home inspection you benefit from my years of building experience and knowledge of building science coupled with familiarity of construction specific to northern Montana.
